Brian Kersten was born into a life surrounded by nature and animals on a quaint farm in Appleton, Wisconsin. This rural upbringing instilled in him a deep love and respect for animals, shaping his future career path. Driven by this passion, he pursued higher education at the University of Minnesota, where he excelled academically. 1977 he graduated with high distinction, earning a Bachelor of Science in Animal Science. His academic journey did not stop there; he continued to expand his knowledge and expertise, culminating in obtaining his Doctor of Veterinary Medicine in 1983.
Professional Milestones
His professional veterinary career began in a mixed animal practice in Burlington, Wisconsin, where he gained invaluable experience working with various animals. His career significantly turned in 1985 when he volunteered for a 2.5-year stint in Haiti. There, he worked on various relief and development projects, providing medical care to animals and helping improve the lives of the local people. This experience enriched his perspective on global health issues and reinforced his dedication to humanitarian efforts.
Upon his return to the United States in 1987, he took a decisive step in his career by purchasing a veterinary practice in Baldwin, Wisconsin. He successfully managed this practice for over a decade, during which he also served as President of the Pierce St. Croix Humane Society from 2001 to 2003. Under his leadership, the practice flourished, becoming a cornerstone of the community and enhancing the local animal welfare landscape.
Establishment of Mercy Veterinary Service
In 2016, after nearly three decades at the helm of his practice, he sold his business, but his passion for veterinary medicine remained undiminished. In 2021, recognizing a growing need for affordable veterinary care, he founded Mercy Veterinary Service in Baldwin. The clinic was established to provide accessible, low-cost veterinary services specializing in small animal medicine, surgery, and dentistry. His commitment to providing care regardless of a pet owner's financial status has made the clinic a vital resource in the community.
Relief Veterinary Work
Besides managing his clinic, he also contributes his skills as a relief veterinarian in Amery, Wisconsin. This role allows him to support other veterinary practices, enhancing the quality of animal care across the region. His work as a relief veterinarian also enables him to stay connected with the broader veterinary community and keep abreast of the latest developments in veterinary medicine.
Philanthropic Efforts and Community Involvement
His dedication to service extends beyond his professional activities. He is a passionate volunteer at Today's Harvest Food Shelf, where he assists in food distribution, helping to address local food insecurity. He also supports global humanitarian efforts through his involvement with Mercy Corps and provides essential veterinary services at Barefoot Crow Animal Rescue. At this rescue, he ensures that rescued animals receive the medical attention they need for a second chance at life.
Personal Life and Interests
Outside of his busy professional life, he enjoys a rich personal life. He is happily married with four adult children who share his passion for animals and community service. In his leisure time, he indulges in various hobbies, including playing the guitar, gardening, reading, and staying active.
